Tony debuted for New Zealand in 1999 and was MVP at the 2000 William Jones Cup tournament in Taiwan. Rampton was a key figure in New Zealand's victory over Australia to qualify for the 2002 world championships, but an ankle injury prevented him from attending the tournament. He was NBL Rookie of the Year in 1999 and dominated the follow year, winning the rebounding title, Outstanding Forward, Outstanding Kiwi Forward and Kiwi MVP awards as well as a spot on the All-Star Five.
