Competing at the 2012 London Olympic Games, Michael represented Rowing in the Quadruple Sculls where the team placed 7th.

Unfortunately, a back injury forced Michael to take a break in competitive rowing however he is now assists a new generation of rowers managing the rowing programme at Auckland Boys Grammar School.
