Glasgow 2014 was the second Commonwealth Games for Joe. He also represented New Zealand at the 2010 Games in Delhi, where he placed 5th. Joe competed at the 2004 Commonwealth Youth Games in Bendigo, where he placed 6th. Joe placed 1st at the 2012 Argentina International Championships and claims that his greatest moment in the sport when he was ranked 58th in the world (singles) in 2010.
